A CHANNEL-SURFING APP BUILT FOR SURPRISE
Switch it on. See whatever comes on. Change the channel when you feel like it.
Most video apps begin with a search box, a wall of thumbnails or a recommendation feed. Random TV Time begins with a television set. It chooses a recorded video, starts playing and lets you move through a shuffled lineup one channel at a time.
That makes it useful when you want to watch something without first deciding exactly what. The app is not live television, a cable replacement or an on-demand catalog. It is a free channel-surfing app that turns publicly accessible video hosted by the Internet Archive into a lean-back, chance-driven experience.
How to channel surf
- Switch on. The app deals a lineup and begins with a random item from the selected channel.
- Move forward or back. Use the next and previous buttons, a swipe, the mouse wheel, arrow keys or a compatible television remote.
- Pick a mood. Stay on Default for a broad mix or choose one of seventeen themed channels, including cartoons, silent pictures, film noir, decade television, commercials, old sports and late night.
- Keep the good surprises. Save an item, review the lineup or open its original page on archive.org for source details.
What makes it different
No profile to train
There is no sign-in and no recommendation history sent to a server. The lineup is shuffled instead of personalized.
No advertising layer
The app contains no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases. The Commercials channel plays historical commercials as programming, not paid placements.
No analytics
Preferences, saved items, hidden items and viewing history remain on your device. The app does not run its own analytics.
Every item has a source
Titles link to their original Internet Archive pages, so you can inspect the uploader’s description and available rights information.
Each channel feels different
The set’s frame, picture treatment, labels and transition effects change to fit cartoons, film noir, a decade or another theme.
Controls stay simple
Change channels, save a program, set a sleep timer, adjust picture and sound, hide an item or open the complete lineup.
Where it works
The browser edition works on modern phone, tablet, computer and smart-television browsers. The Android edition is available through Google Play for phones and tablets, with a direct APK for compatible Android TV and Fire TV devices. See the download page for current options or follow the television installation guide.
What to expect from archival video
Programs are streamed from the Internet Archive, not from a Random TV Time server. Availability, descriptions and file quality vary by item. A title may be mislabeled, a file may fail to play, and the Archive can sometimes be slow. The app gives an item a limited time to start and then skips it if needed.
A title-and-tag safety filter is on by default, but metadata cannot describe every frame of a video. Random TV Time is intended for adults age 18 and older. You can hide an item permanently, report it to the app’s maker and use the source page’s reporting controls.
